Magnesium Deficiency: More Common Than we Know

There is a huge problem humans are facing right now without even knowing it. Up to 80% of Americans are magnesium deficient. Most people don't know that they are because the symptoms can be from many other things and it is very hard to diagnose magnesium deficiency.

Why do we need magnesium?
Magnesium is essential to over 300 different reactions in the human body. It is essential that you have a daily intake of magnesium because everything in your body needs it to function properly. It is the most critical mineral required for stability of every cell in the body.

Why don't people get enough magnesium?
These days, most foods are processed. When foods are processed they don't have the natural magnesium in them anymore. Even if there are vegetables or meats that are unprocessed, farmers use tax on the soil or fertilizers use nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus, and do nothing to replenish magnesium level. Also the animals are bred to live with low levels of magnesium. Water would be a good source of magnesium if it was from deep wells that have magnesium, or from a mineral-rich glacial runoff which is not where most peoples' water sources are from. This has resulted in an epidemic of magnesium deficiency.

How come people don't know they have a magnesium deficiency?
Magnesium deficiency is very hard to diagnose. Unfortunately, while magnesium helps everything else in the body only 1% of it is stored in your blood so a blood test will not detect magnesium deficiency. The only way to tell is by your symptoms.

Even if you have 1 of these symptoms you might have a magnesium deficiency. If you have 5 or more of these symptoms then there is a high chance you have of a magnesium deficiency:
  • Inability to sleep or insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Sensitivity to noise
  • Mental disturbances
  • Anxiety or restlessness
  • Muscle soreness or spasms
  • Infertility or PMS
  • Depression
  • High levels of stress
  • Headaches
  • Heart flutters or palpitations
  • Fatigue or unusual tiredness
  • Coldness in extremities
  • Fuzzy brain or difficulty concentrating
  • Allergies and sensitivities
  • Lack of appetite
  • Back pain
  • Body odor
  • Bad short term memory
  • Poor coordination
  • Insulin resistance
  • Carbohydrate cravings
  • Constipation
  • Frequent cavities or poor dental health
  • Gut disorders
  • Kidney stones
  • Thyroid problems
How can you fix this problem?
Always consult with your doctor before taking action. But there are supplements that can restre your magnesium deficiency. The least effective way is to take oral supplements because your digestive system may not absorb it as well. There are body oils, lotions and epsom salts with magnesium in them which will soak directly in your skin. Make sure you don't take too much magnesium though.
